How to Entertain on Your Boat

There’s no party like an onboard boat party. After all, hosting a gathering of friends on your boat – surrounded by fresh air and beautiful water – is likely a lot more enjoyable and memorable than a gathering at a house. But entertaining on a boat presents unique challenges. Here are a few tips to make your onboard get-together a success.

  1. Keep meals simple. If your boat has a galley, it will likely have limited appliances and space. Keep your onboard food prep to a minimum. Prepare what you can ahead of time and offer food that is light and easy-to-assemble.
  2. Create a packing list. Once your boat leaves land, you can’t just run to the store if you forgot something. Create a list and check it multiple times to make sure you have everything.
  3. Keep a strict guest list. Space is tight on a boat. Create a guest list and make sure everyone knows to stick to it.
  4. Decorate appropriately. Does your party have a theme? Are you getting together for a holiday? If so, decorate appropriately. For example, for July 4th, be sure to have sparklers, flags and red, white and blue plates, cups and decorations.
  5. Prepare for the weather. Being outside, you and your guests are vulnerable to the elements. Winds can kick up. A surprise shower can pass through. Make sure guests are prepared with rain gear and windbreakers. Also, have plenty of sunscreen available.
